The Real Difference Between Blog Writing and Copywriting

By Danielle Bult

Whenever I explain to someone about what I do there is always that one person that goes ‘what is copywriting exactly?’ and it got me thinking. Copywriting is a word used so often within the marketing world, but not many people outside of the marketing industry actually know what it entails. Heck, I didn’t even know what it meant until I did my research. A lot of the time blog writing and copywriting are labelled the same when really, they are oh so different. So, I want to break down the real difference between blog writing and copywriting.

What is blog writing?

Blog writing is written articles developed for the blog section of a website or within a magazine. Blog posts can really improve the SEO for your website as it builds the amount of content on your website, allowing Google and other search engines know that what you’re providing is relevant to particular searches. They can also be used as a way of building trust and rapport with consumers as blog posts are usually quite informative and educational. This allows the consumer to know that your brand has in depth knowledge of the service you are providing.

What is copywriting?

You see those words written on your favourite cleanser? A copywriter wrote them.

And you see those words written on the ‘About Us’ page of your brow ladies’ website… a copywriter probably wrote those words too. A copywriters job is to write words to describe certain objects, products, brands etc. A copywriter wants the audience to feel a certain type of way when they read those words. Your copywriter will write those words with one main goal in mind… to sell.

With my clients a lot of the time I will ask them ‘if your brand was a person, describe to me their personality! What’s their coffee order? What’s their favourite meal? What’s their favourite colour?’ and from there, you develop your brands identity and the rest follows.

Both copy writing and blog writing can be magnificent marketing tools for your business, so hiring a freelance blog writer or copywriter for your team can make this side of your business a lot easier.
